Who will be British monarch after King Charles? Chain of succession explained

#KingCharles #KingCharlesCoronation #PrinceWilliam

  • The British throne’s succession will pass to Prince William after the current monarch’s reign.
  • The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 removed the previous male preference rule and granted permission for heirs to marry individuals of the Roman Catholic faith.
  • The present order of succession comprises Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, and Prince Harry.

In the upcoming month, Prince Charles is scheduled to be coronated as King Charles III, but what comes next for the British monarchy? Prince William is next in the line of succession, and he will assume the throne as the King of England after Charles. Prince William is the eldest child of Charles, who is the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II. The British system of primogeniture confers the right of succession upon the eldest child, hence Prince William’s status as the next in line for the throne.

In recent times, the succession system has experienced modifications. The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 has eradicated the male preference in the line of succession. The Act mandates that the order of succession is determined exclusively by the birth order of a monarch’s children, regardless of their gender. Therefore, even if a royal couple has a daughter before having a son, the daughter will be higher in the line of succession than the son.

In addition, the Act enables an heir to marry a Roman Catholic and retain their position in the line of succession, which was not permitted previously. This has consequences for the existing line of succession, including the offspring of Prince Harry, who has a mother that follows the Roman Catholic faith.

The present order of succession to the British throne, listed in sequence, consists of Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Prince Harry, Prince Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, Princess Lilbet Mountbatten-Windsor, Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, Prince Edward, James, Viscount Severn, Lady Louise Windsor, Anne – Princess Royal, Peter Phillips, Savannah Phillips, Isla Phillips, and Zara Tindall.

It is essential to bear in mind that the line of succession is subject to alteration due to factors such as births, deaths, marriages, or any other events that may impact a royal’s eligibility to ascend to the throne. If Prince William and Kate Middleton welcome a new child, it would push the current order of succession down further.

After King Charles III, Prince William will be the next in the line of succession for the British throne. The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 has removed any gender bias from the line of succession, with the order being established solely by the birth order of a monarch’s children. It is worth mentioning that the current line of succession includes the children of Prince Harry, who are Roman Catholic. Nevertheless, the order of succession is susceptible to change due to events like births, deaths, marriages, or any other factors that could influence a royal’s eligibility to inherit the throne.
