What did Alice Cooper say? Transphobic controversy explained as rockstar rips into woke ideology

On August 23, American rock musician Alice Cooper interviewed with Stereogum and shared his opinions on gender transition and gender care for minors and youths. He said he was against the whole idea and was “afraid that it’s also a fad.” He also referred to the usual anti-trans talking points and explained that he felt that kids were not mature enough to make life-altering and major decisions such as choosing their gender identity.

While revealing that he was not in favor of real-world gender-affirming care, Alice Cooper also pointed out that “woke” parents nowadays try to manipulate their children into believing that they can be any gender they want, when perhaps all the kid wants is to play around. He also claimed that society has gone far too progressive and to the “point of absurdity.”

He said in the interview:

“Who’s making the rules? Is there a building somewhere in New York where people sit down every day and say, ‘Okay, we can’t say ‘mother’ now, we have to say ‘birthing person.’ Get that out on the wire now?”

Unfortunately, Alice Cooper’s comments are being deemed as anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ+, as well as controversial. In fact, his remarks come at the same time when the internet is busy taking down legendary guitarist Carlos Santana for making similar anti-LGBTQ+ comments on stage stating how there were only two genders and “a woman is a woman and a man is a man.”

Alice Cooper calls gender transitioning “a whole woke thing”

In a recent interview with Stereogum’s Rachel Brodsky, 75-year-old rock icon Alice Cooper shared his perspective on gender-affirming care for young individuals and the concept of gender transitioning. When asked about his thoughts on transgenderism, given his history of experimenting with gender expectations in his shock rock music, Cooper expressed his opposition and referred to it as part of the broader “woke” movement.

Often referred to as the Godfather of Shock Rock, Cooper likened the evolving societal landscape to a narrative reminiscent of Kurt Vonnegut’s works. He conveyed the idea that individuals could now embrace any identity they wished, even stretching to identifying as non-human entities like trees or cats. He characterized gender transitioning and gender-affirming care as short-lived trends, describing them as “fad” and “absurd.” He also voiced concern that some people might be claiming transgender identities merely to align themselves with the LGBTQ+ community, which he found troubling.

He continued :

“I find it wrong when you’ve got a 6-year-old kid who has no idea. He just wants to play, and you’re confusing him, telling him, ‘Yeah, you’re a boy, but you could be a girl if you want to be.”

Furthermore, Alice Cooper issued a caution about the potential risks associated with gender affirmation, not only for young children but also for teenagers who were still in the process of discovering their genuine identities. He also commented on the prevailing societal shift towards heightened awareness, often referred to as being “woke,” and the prevalent adoption of “progressive language” in line with this trend. Cooper expressed uncertainty about the originators of these new norms and questioned whether they were established through a hierarchical structure.

While reflecting on these changes, he made it clear that his stance was not rooted in traditionalism or being old-fashioned, but rather in a logical assessment of the situation. Cooper pondered whether these shifts in societal perspectives were orchestrated from the top down, indicating that he was approaching the topic with a thoughtful and rational perspective.

He stated:

“It’s getting to the point now where it’s laughable. If anybody was trying to make a point on this thing, they turned it into a huge comedy.”

“I have been retained to act as President Trump’s legal counsel for the Fulton County case in Georgia. The indictment of the president should never have occurred. He maintains his innocence regarding all alleged charges. Our aim is for the case to be either dismissed, or if necessary, for an impartial and open-minded jury to deliver a not guilty verdict.”

Continuing his thoughts, Alice Cooper expressed that he personally did not personally know anyone who aligned with the “woke” ideology. However, he acknowledged that there were many individuals within society who did subscribe to it. Moreover, he made a direct statement opposing transgender rights, suggesting that if transgender individuals were permitted to use public restrooms based on their gender identity rather than their biological sex, it could potentially result in an increase in violent crimes, suggesting that this scenario might manifest soon.

As the interview came to a close, when the interviewer offered a counterpoint by suggesting that parents should listen to their children and seek guidance from appropriate medical professionals, Alice Cooper chose not to retract his viewpoints. Instead, he reiterated his concern that embracing radical gender ideologies could lead to unforeseen and potentially negative consequences.

He said :

“A guy can walk into a woman’s bathroom at any time and just say, ‘I just feel like I’m a woman today’ and have the time of his life in there. He’s just taking advantage of that situation…Somebody’s going to get r*ped.”

Alice Cooper additionally emphasized the importance of allowing young individuals to develop a certain level of sexual awareness before promoting or encouraging them to undergo gender transition. He suggested that adults should take the initiative to provide a comprehensive understanding of how gender transitioning and gender-affirming care function in practical terms. Alongside this, he underscored the need to reassure individuals that their biological sex does not change, meaning that a boy is biologically male and a girl is biologically female. This balanced approach, Cooper implied, could help guide individuals through the complexities of gender identity and transitioning.

Other musicians who made similar comments like Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper’s controversial remarks on gender transition and gender-affirming care are not isolated in recent times. Earlier in May, guitarist Paul Stanley expressed similar sentiments, referring to gender-affirming care as a “sad and dangerous fad.” Stanley also criticized what he saw as a rush to label children with gender identities without allowing them to understand their innate identities.

In response to Stanley’s comments, Dee Snider, the lead vocalist of Twisted Sister, supported Stanley’s perspective by recounting his own experiences of questioning gender identity but appreciating his parents’ guidance in not hastily jumping to conclusions. It’s noteworthy that both Stanley and Snider later retracted their statements after facing backlash online.

Conversely, recent Stanford research has asserted that gender-affirming care plays a significant role in reducing mental health challenges among transgender youth, helping mitigate depression and suicidal tendencies. However, contrasting viewpoints exist within the medical community. The Endocrine Society and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health have issued strict recommendations against gender-affirming surgeries for individuals under 18. These discussions unfold in the context of a broader legislative landscape, with hundreds of bills related to transgender and LGBTQ+ issues under consideration in the U.S.
