The Devil Wears Prada, released in 2006

Highly popular comedy-drama directed by David Frankel and produced by Wendy Finerman. Based on Lauren Weisberger’s novel of the same name, the screenplay was written by Aline Brosh McKenna. The movie stars Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, a formidable editor of a fashion magazine, and Anne Hathaway as Andrea “Andy” Sachs, a recent college graduate who becomes Priestly’s co-assistant.

Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci also play significant roles as Andy’s co-assistant Emily Charlton and art director Nigel Kipling, respectively. Additional supporting roles are portrayed by Simon Baker and Adrian Grenier. 20th Century Fox acquired the film rights to Weisberger’s novel in 2003, even before its publication, but the project was greenlit after Streep was cast in the lead role. Principal photography spanned 57 days, primarily in New York City from October to December 2005, with some scenes filmed in Paris, France. The Devil Wears Prada premiered at the LA Film Festival on June 22, 2006, followed by its theatrical release in the United States on June 30. The film received positive reviews from critics, with Streep’s performance earning widespread acclaim.

Streep garnered various awards and nominations, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, as well as nominations for the Academy Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award. Hathaway and Blunt also received praise for their performances, earning nominations for their respective roles. The film surpassed its $41 million budget, grossing over $326 million worldwide and ranking as the 12th highest-grossing film of 2006 globally.

Although the story is set in the fashion world and references well-known industry figures and establishments, most designers and fashion personalities chose not to appear as themselves in the film due to potential backlash from US Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is widely believed to have inspired the character of Miranda Priestly. However, many designers allowed their clothing and accessories to be featured, making The Devil Wears Prada one of the most expensive films in terms of costumes. Wintour later expressed her appreciation for the film and specifically praised Streep’s portrayal.
