Liverpool warn Chelsea raid for highly publicized star will backfire, second issue branded ‘absurd’

Liverpool have been given two reasons why they should not sign an attacker whose future at Chelsea looks increasingly uncertain.

As an academy graduate, the general consensus has long been that Mason Mount is destined to remain at Stamford Bridge for a long time. However, as per recent reports, doubts are being raised whether this scenario will change.

The 23-year-old remains a vital cog in all of Chelsea’s good performances. Although he hasn’t enjoyed his best season so far this year, he has contributed four goals in the Premier League and four assists in the Champions League.

Mount is currently on international duty with England where his place is under threat for their round of 16 clash against Senegal. Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden are both pushing for starts after finding the net three times against Wales.

Mount’s position at club level is also poor, with the Daily Mail recently reporting a contract extension has been rejected.

His current deal expires in the summer of 2024 and an offer worth £200,000-a-week was expected to secure his future.

Mount eyes a big prize

However, Mount had other ideas and it is understood that Rahim was pursuing the type of money Sterling received. The X-Man City winger is believed to pocket north of £300,000 a week.

Whether the Mount warrants that type of reward is clearly open to debate. What is for sure, though, is what will happen if Chelsea turn their backs on Mt.

The Guardian reported that Liverpool and Juventus are both interested. The report came ahead of Juve’s meltdown, meaning the Reds could have a clear run on transfers if Mount departs.

Liverpool are known to be chasing at least one, maybe two midfielders in 2023. The double coup of Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount would represent a tremendous summer from Jurgen Klopp’s side.

However, one observer who does not buy into the Mount hype is Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Mason Mount “Not That” To Help Lift Love Titles – Agbonlahor

The former Aston Villa frontman spoke to Football Insider and outlined why he thinks Mount is not the right person for Klopp.

Agbonlahor called Mount’s reported £300,000-a-week salary “absurd”. In the pundit’s mind, the Mount hasn’t done anywhere near enough to justify that level of outlay. And Liverpool may well echo that opinion.

“Mason Mount I don’t think is the right man for Liverpool,” Agbonlahor said.

“I wouldn’t buy him. He’s a very good player. But I don’t think he’s the type of player that’s going to get you the Premier League title.

“The money he is asking Chelsea for is absurd because he has not performed for the money he is asking for.”
