IES Exam Pattern 2014 Details of Paper Pattern & Syllabus for Preparation
The Indian Engineering Services (IES) is the qualifying national level competitive exam conducted by the UPSC for selection of eligible applicants in the different Group A & B Posts /Services for different streams of engineering. The exam is organized by the Union Public Service Commission every year to short list candidates in different cadres of services in the months of June/ July respectively. Those interested and eligible to apply in the concerned exam should go through the paper pattern and preparation criteria for the concerned exam from the information as given here below.

Eligibility for Exam:
Graduation in engineering which includes either Bachelor of Technology/ Bachelor of Engineering degree courses from any UGC recognized universities or colleges prescribed for this purpose. The qualifying ages of all the applicants should be in between 21 to 30 years respectively.
There are basically following four categories for which the exam takes place and the candidates should qualify and appear in the two exams namely: written examination and interview respectively to be held on the scheduled dates for all the applicants.

1) Civil Engineering
2) Mechanical Engineering
3) Electrical Engineering and
4) Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering
Scheme of Examinations:
There shall be objective type questions to be answered in the given time frame for section I of the paper. The candidates should attempt essay type questions of the section II from the core subjects in English language only. The candidates are required to prepare as per the syllabus of the qualifying degree exam i.e. B.Tech/ B.E. for clearing the concerned UPSC Exam.

Duration of Exam: 2 Hours
Total Marks Allotted: 200
Paper I (200 Marks) 2 Hours
Paper II (200 Marks) 2 Hours
Section II: Conventional Paper
Paper I (200 Marks) 3 Hours
Paper II (200 Marks) 3 Hours
Total Allotted Marks: 1000
Marks Allotted to Interview: 200
The candidates should score the minimum cut off marks as required in the Section I (Objective Type) paper in order to appear for the next round of exam i.e. Section II (Conventional Type). The candidates shall be penalized in the form of one-third marks being deducted for every wrong attempts made by them. Also, an additional 5% marks shall be deducted for all those candidates whose writings are not eligible in the descriptive paper respectively.
