  • Texas because they anticipated a significant increase in the number of migrants arriving from Mexico.
  • This increased vigilance on the US borders was due to the expiration of Title 42 at midnight on Thursday.

As the Title 42 expired at midnight on Thursday, several law enforcement agencies gathered at the Gateway International Bridge situated in Brownsville, Texas. They were anticipating a substantial influx of migrants arriving from Mexico, resulting in heightened alertness on the US borders.

The bridge was crowded with hundreds of migrants who were captured on camera waiting for the expiration of Title 42.

In March 2020, Donald Trump implemented Title 42 as a measure to prevent the entry of migrants into the United States and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Before the enforcement, migrants could illegally cross the border and ask for asylum. They would be screened and often released to wait out their immigration cases.

Upon taking office in 2021, President Joe Biden retained Title 42, but encountered significant opposition from Republicans when he attempted to terminate it in 2022.

In January, the Biden administration declared an end to the national COVID-19 emergencies, which consequently eliminated any border restrictions.

The impact of Title 42’s expulsion is most prominent on the southern border of the country, where unprecedented numbers of migrants were waiting for the restrictions to be lifted.

In a statement, UNICEF asserted that migrant children have fundamental rights such as the right to request asylum, be shielded from danger, and remain with their families. The organization expressed optimism that the termination of Title 42’s public-health-related asylum restrictions at the US-Mexico border will help to uphold and protect these rights. UNICEF praised recent initiatives aimed at facilitating secure migration routes for children and families on the move, and appealed to all governments, including the US, to guarantee access to asylum processes for everyone, irrespective of their nationality.
