In March 2020, Donald Trump implemented Title 42 as a measure to prevent the entry of migrants into the United States and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Before the enforcement, migrants could illegally cross the border and ask for asylum. They would be screened and often released to wait out their immigration cases.

Upon taking office in 2021, President Joe Biden retained Title 42, but encountered significant opposition from Republicans when he attempted to terminate it in 2022.

UNICEF praised recent initiatives aimed at facilitating secure migration routes for children and families on the move, and appealed to all governments, including the US, to guarantee access to asylum processes for everyone, irrespective of their nationality.
