The Gandhigram Rural Institute was started in the year 1956 in Tamil Nadu. The institute was developed by Dr TS Soundaram and Dr G Ramachandran for “Nai Taleem” principle of Mahatma Gandhi to be followed by it. The institute was awarded the status of a deemed to be university by University Grants Commission in the year 1976. Since, then the university has been playing a very important role in providing higher education to the students enrolled based on the concepts of Nai Taleem. The university curriculum has some of the academic programmes that go by this concept. These include programmes on rural development, rural economics, extension education, rural oriented sciences, cooperation, development administration, rural sociology, English and communicative studies, Tamil and other Indian Languages etc.
