American Idol 2023 Finalists – Who are the Top 12 Contestants?

In this article, we’ll explore the American Idol finalists and delve into the backgrounds of the talented contestants that have captured the public’s curiosity for the 2023 season.

American Idol 2023

On ABC television network, the 21st season of the American Idol singing competition debuted on February 19, 2023. This marks the sixth season to air on ABC since the show’s revival, with Ryan Seacrest as the host and Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie returning as judges.

The show resumed its virtual auditions program, Idol Across America, which was successful in the last two seasons. The auditions were conducted from August 3 to September 14, 2022, with additional open-call auditions. Contestants were selected by producers from the pool of applicants to audition for the judges.

Similar to the previous season, the audition round featured the “platinum ticket” award, given to three recipients who bypassed the first round of Hollywood Week to select their partners for the Duet Challenge. Additionally, three contestants were given a chance to compete for the fourth platinum ticket at the American Music Awards. The four winners of the platinum tickets were Tyson Venegas, Kaylin Hedges, Cam Amen, and Elijah McCormick.

After each group’s performance, the judges evaluated the contestants and advanced those who impressed them to the Duet Challenge. The platinum ticket holders were given the privilege to select their duet partners, while the remaining contestants were paired by the judges. The duet pairs had twelve hours to rehearse, with coaching from a vocal coach, a stage rehearsal, and advice from one of the judges. Those who passed the Duet Challenge progressed to the Showstopper Round.

American Idol 2023 Finalists

Participating in American Idol can be nerve-wracking for contestants throughout the competition. Whether it’s facing judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan during the initial audition or experiencing tense moments during Hollywood Week, the Top 26 announcement, or the live shows, the stakes are always high. Now, it’s time for the Top 20 to be trimmed down to the Top 12.

Following audience votes, 10 contestants secured their spots in the next round, while the judges will select the remaining two contestants. As a result, eight hopefuls were eliminated from the competition during the April 24, 2023 episode.

Tonight’s American Idol episode returned to the usual two-hour format after the lengthy three-hour episode on the previous night. Despite a pesky fly causing some disturbances during the performances, all the contestants delivered exceptional performances. It’s now time to unveil this season’s Top 12 contestants.

Who Made the American Idol Top 12?

On the April 24th episode of American Idol, the top 20 contestants will compete to secure a spot in the top 12. Each of the 20 contestants will perform and then be sorted into either the victory or danger zone. After the audience votes, the 10 contestants with the most votes will be announced as the top 12. The judges will then select the final 2 finalists. However, by the end of the episode, 8 of the contestants will be eliminated.

We Ani

Anni kicked off the top 20 performances on American Idol with a stunning rendition of “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman, securing the first spot in the top 12. The next contestant, Michael Williams, took the stage and faced the risk of elimination. He performed a smooth and ethereal version of “golden hour” by JVKE, impressing the judges. Katy Perry appreciated Michael’s overall energy and humorously suggested that envy may have been the reason he wasn’t voted for.

Warren Peay

Following We McDonald’s performance, Warren Peay becomes the next contestant to secure a spot in the top 12 on American Idol. Warren impresses the judges with his performance of “It’s Not My Time” by 3 Doors Down, while flaunting his long locks. However, Mariah Faith finds herself in the danger zone and has to perform for a judge’s save. She delivers a powerful rendition of “If It Hadn’t Been for Love” by The Steeldrivers, earning praise from Judge Luke Bryan, who remarks, “That’s the Mariah we’ve been used to. It was the perfect song choice for you tonight.”

Haven Madison

Haven Madison secures her spot in the top 12 with a breathtaking performance of her original song “Fifteen,” which she had previously sung during her audition. Nailyah Serenity, on the other hand, finds herself in the danger zone and has to perform to survive. She delivers a stunning rendition of Sia’s “Alive,” earning high praise from Katy Perry who says, “You are a genuine star.”

Tyson Venegas

The sole remaining holder of the platinum ticket has successfully secured a place among the Top 12 contestants. With a stirring performance of Elton John’s “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” the 17-year-old Canadian celebrated his remarkable achievement. His previous audition had already won over the judges, and he continued to display the same level of excellence during the latest round on Monday.

Colin Stough

Colin Stough secures his place in the top 12 of American Idol with a stunning performance of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own.” The rendition captures the judges’ attention, and Luke Bryan’s excitement is evident as he jumps up and down and rushes to embrace Colin. “That was a moment that could change your life,” Katy Perry comments, emphasizing the significance of Colin’s performance.

MaryBeth Byrd

Following Colin’s impressive performance, Marybeth Byrd secures her spot in the top 12 with a beautiful rendition of Morgan Wallen’s “Cover Me Up.” However, Kaeyra finds herself in the danger zone and has to perform to stay in the competition. She delivers a stunning performance of “If I Were Your Woman” by Gladys Knight & The Pips, earning high praise from Katy Perry, who gives her an “A+.”

Iam Tongi

Iam Tongi secures his spot in the top 12 with an exceptional performance of Lionel’s hit song, “Stuck On You.” Despite a brief disturbance caused by a fly that landed on his head during the performance, Iam remains unfazed and continues to sing with passion. After his performance, Lionel rushes on stage to give him his stamp of approval and embrace him, proud of his unique rendition of his own song.

Oliver Steele

Oliver Steele wows the judges and secures his place in the top 12 with his mesmerizing performance of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still The One.” His unique and artistic interpretation of the song demonstrates his range and versatility as a performer. Despite previously expressing doubts about his abilities, Oliver’s newfound confidence shines through as he delivers a memorable and captivating performance.

Lucy Love

Despite not making it to the top 12, Lucy Love puts all her effort into her performance to impress the judges and earn their approval. She sings Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” revealing a new side of her talent. The audience cheers her on and Lionel shows his confidence in her by saying, “If I had to pick someone to bet on, it would be you.”

Zachariah Smith

Zachariah Smith joins Iam, Oliver, and the other contestants in the top 12 after delivering an electrifying performance of Toto’s rock classic “Hold The Line.” With high energy and passion, Zachariah impresses the judges and the audience alike, demonstrating his commitment to giving his all in every performance.

Megan Danielle

By performing Lauren Daigle’s “Thank God I Do,” Danielle pays tribute to her idol and secures her spot in the top 12 as the last contestant voted in by the audience at home. Despite being underestimated before, Danielle’s remarkable performance highlights her potential to go all the way to the finale.

Nutsa

Nutsa ended the last night of performances with a mission to earn a judges’ pick. She impressed the judges with a powerful performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls, channeling her inner Jennifer Hudson and delivering a message through her song choice. Luke complimented Nutsa on her exceptional performance, especially given the intense pressure. Both Luke and Katy showed their support for Nutsa, ultimately selecting her for the remaining judges’ spot in the Top 12.
