Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) is one of the competitive examinations that has stated in India in the pre-independence era, and which has retained its specialty as one of the most privileged category of entrance examination in the recent times. Being considered among the most prestigious entrance examinations being conducted each year with almost 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh applicants this is really a special examination which is conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for a 4 years Apprenticeship training the Mechanical Engineering Department of Indian Railways.

For the coming year, the SCRA examination 2014 is scheduled to be held on 20th of January 2013. The details of the examination and the essential criteria for eligibility is detailed as under:

Important Schedule of Events:
•Date of commencement of receipt of Application Form: 13th of October 2012
•Date of final closure of receipt of Application Form: 12th of November 2012
•Date scheduled for examination: 20th of January 2013
•Mode of Application: ONLINE only through the website of UPSC at http://www.upsconline.nic.in . No other mode of application will be entertained from the applicants.

Vital Eligibility Criteria:

Age Requirement factor:

The applicant interested for SCRA examination 2013 must be within the age band of 17 -21 years as on 1st of January 2013. However, there will be consideration for upper age limit extension for privileged category as per the rules laid by the UPSC.

Academic Requirement Factors:
The applicant must have completed his intermediate (10+2) in first or second division and must have Mathematics and Physics/Chemistry as a subject of examination
Or,
The applicant must have successfully passed the pre-University examination in first or second division
Or,
Candidates who have passed in the first year of five years of Degree Engineering Examination are also eligible to apply provided they have secured first/ second division in the intermediate level
NOTE: Those candidates awaiting their final year results on intermediate degree can also apply for this examination, only with a condition that they must have obtained the desired qualification by the time of sending of detailed application form after passing the written part of examination.
Application Fees to be rendered:

•An applicant need to submit an application fee of Rs.100/- (Rupees One Hundred only) through net banking facility at SBI or its associate banks or through cash deposit challan at any branch of SBI or its associate banks.
•No other mode of fee payment will however be accepted.
•The application fee is waived in case of SC, ST, Women, and PWD candidates.

Stipendiary Provisions:

The selected applicants for SCRA will be entitled to the following stipendiary norms:
During 1st and 2nd year of Apprentice Training: Rs.9100/- per month
During 3rd and 4th year of Apprentice Training: Rs.9400/- per month
During last 6 months of 4th year of Apprentice Training: Rs.9700/- per month
